Plan Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day Events

10/7/2015

MARTINSBURG, W.VA. – In support of The Plastic Surgery Foundation’s fourth annual Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day observance on October 21, University Healthcare and University Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery Associates are planning several events during the month of October.

BRA Day is an initiative designed to promote education, awareness and access regarding post-mastectomy breast reconstruction.  Held annually during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, BRA Day was established to inspire women to know that life beyond breast cancer can be very fulfilling.

“Women enduring breast cancer are incredibly brave and have their own unique journey,” stated Richard Casuccio, MD, board certified plastic surgeon.  “Together, we can spread the word to breast cancer patients about their breast reconstruction options.  Informing them at the time of diagnosis is critically important to improving life after breast cancer,” he added.

According to Casuccio, he was actively involved in BRA Day celebrations when he practiced in Morgantown.  Now that he is with University Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery Associates in the Eastern Panhandle, he wanted to continue the awareness campaign here as well.

On October 8, the Martinsburg City Council will proclaim October 21, 2015 as National Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day.  University Healthcare has designed a special limited edition t-shirt for BRA Day 2015 which will be available for $15.  Money raised will be donated to the University Healthcare Foundation’s Cancer Comfort Fund to benefit cancer patients locally.

BRA Day is a collaborative effort between the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The Plastic Surgery Foundation, breast center, nurse navigators, corporate partners and breast cancer support groups.  On October 22, representatives from University Healthcare and University Healthcare Physicians will don their BRA Day t-shirts and form a human ribbon in the McCormack Center parking lot on the Berkeley Medical Center campus.

“This event symbolizes the importance of everyone working as a team in support of Breast Cancer Reconstruction Awareness and our breast cancer patients,” Casuccio said.
