How to inject Wegovy (step-by-step)
Wegovy injections use a pre-filled, single-dose pen. The process takes about 10 seconds once you’re familiar with it.
Before you inject
- Let the pen warm up. Take it out of the refrigerator 30 minutes before injecting. Room temperature medication is more comfortable and may cause less irritation.
- Check the pen. Make sure the liquid is clear and colorless. Don’t use it if it’s cloudy, discolored, or contains particles.
- Wash your hands. Use soap and water. Dry completely.
- Gather supplies. You need the pen, an alcohol swab, and access to a sharps container.
Injection steps
- Choose your injection site: Abdomen (2+ inches from belly button), front of thighs, or back of upper arms
- Clean the site. Wipe with alcohol and let it air dry. Don’t blow on it or fan it.
- Remove the pen cap. Pull straight off. The needle is hidden inside.
- Position the pen. Hold at 90 degrees (straight) against your skin. Press firmly.
- Start the injection. Press the button until you hear a click. Keep holding.
- Wait for completion. Hold 5-10 seconds until the yellow bar stops and you hear a second click.
- Remove and dispose. Pull straight out. Put in sharps container. Don’t try to recap it.
- Apply pressure if needed. If bleeding, press gently. Don’t rub.
How to take oral Wegovy
The daily tablet has strict rules because oral semaglutide has very low absorption (~1%). Taking it incorrectly makes it less effective.
- Take first thing in the morning, including coffee
- Empty stomach required
- Use plain water only (4 oz max)
- Wait 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or other meds
- Swallow whole. Don’t crush, chew, or split
- Stay upright for 30 minutes after
The tablet contains an absorption enhancer called SNAC that only works under specific conditions. Food, other liquids, or too much water interfere with absorption.
12 tips for taking Wegovy
Injection Tips
1. Same day, flexible time. Pick a consistent day (like Sunday), but morning or evening is fine.
2. Room temperature matters. Cold medication stings more. The 30-minute warm-up makes a real difference.
3. Pinch if you’re lean. Less body fat? Pinch the skin before inserting to reach subcutaneous tissue.
4. Relax the muscle. Tense muscles hurt more. Breathe and relax the area first.
5. Rotate religiously. Same spot repeatedly causes skin damage and inconsistent absorption.
Managing Side Effects
6. Eat smaller meals. Large portions trigger more nausea. Small, frequent meals work better.
7. Avoid trigger foods. Fatty, fried, greasy, and spicy foods make GI side effects worse.
8. Stay hydrated. Nausea and vomiting dehydrate you. Drink water throughout the day.
9. Time your dose strategically. If nausea is bad, inject before bed so you sleep through it.
10. Ginger helps. Ginger tea or ginger candy can reduce nausea naturally.
Getting Better Results
11. Don’t skip the titration. The gradual dose increase exists for a reason. Jumping ahead causes worse side effects.
12. Eat protein first. Prioritize protein to preserve muscle mass and stay fuller longer.
What if you miss a dose?
Missed injection
If your next dose is more than 2 days (48 hours) away: Take the missed dose now. Continue your regular schedule.
If your next dose is 2 days or less away: Skip the missed dose. Take your next dose on the scheduled day. Don’t double up.
If you’ve missed 2+ weeks: Contact your doctor. You may need to restart at a lower dose.
Missed oral tablet
Skip it entirely. Take your next tablet the following morning. Never double up or take it later in the day.
Storage and handling
Refrigerator storage
- Keep unused pens in refrigerator (36°F to 46°F)
- Store in original carton to protect from light
- Don’t freeze (freezing destroys the medication)
Room temperature storage
- Pens can stay at room temp (up to 86°F) for up to 28 days
- Mark the date when removed from fridge
- Discard after 28 days at room temp, even if unused
Oral tablets
- Store at room temperature (68°F to 77°F)
- Keep in original blister pack until use
- Protect from moisture
When to call your doctor
Contact your healthcare provider if you experience:
- Severe stomach pain that doesn’t go away
- Signs of pancreatitis (pain radiating to back)
- Gallbladder symptoms (pain under ribs, fever, yellowing skin)
- Signs of low blood sugar (if on diabetes meds)
- Severe vomiting preventing you from eating
- Allergic reaction (swelling, difficulty breathing, rash)
Frequently asked questions
The bottom line
Taking Wegovy correctly improves both effectiveness and tolerability. For injections, the key points are room temperature medication, proper site rotation, and holding the pen long enough. For oral tablets, the strict fasting rules exist because the medication won’t absorb properly otherwise.
The 12 tips above come from real-world experience. Start with the basics: proper injection technique and managing side effects with diet adjustments. You’ll have a smoother experience.
